Kate Middleton reveals cancer diagnosis in heartfelt message

Catherine, Princess of Wales, has revealed her battle with cancer in a heartfelt video message. The British royal shared her diagnosis and the subsequent journey she's embarking upon with the unwavering support of her family, notably her husband, Prince William, the heir to the throne.

The revelation comes after weeks of speculation swirling on social media regarding her health and whereabouts since her hospitalisation in January for undisclosed abdominal surgery. Until now, the details surrounding her condition were shrouded in secrecy, with Kensington Palace providing minimal information, assuring the public that the ailment was not cancer-related.

In her brave disclosure, Kate, as she is affectionately known, beseeched for "time, space and privacy" as she navigates through preventive chemotherapy. The 42-year-old princess, who had been absent from public view since Christmas, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from well-wishers.

“I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you, personally, for all the wonderful messages of support and for your understanding whilst I have been recovering from surgery," the Princess said. “It has been an incredibly tough couple of months for our entire family, but I’ve had a fantastic medical team who have taken great care of me, for which I am so grateful.

“In January, I underwent major abdominal surgery in London and at the time, it was thought that my condition was non-cancerous. The surgery was successful. “However, tests after the operation found cancer had been present. My medical team therefore advised that I should undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy and I am now in the early stages of that treatment.

“This of course came as a huge shock, and William and I have been doing everything we can to process and manage this privately for the sake of our young family. As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment."

The decision to delay the public announcement of her diagnosis was primarily motivated by a desire to shield her three young children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis – from the tumult of media speculation and ensure they were informed in a manner suitable for their tender age.

“Most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok," Kate explained.

The timing of her announcement, coinciding with the end of the school term and the commencement of the royal family's Easter holiday, underscores the meticulous consideration afforded to every aspect of this deeply personal revelation.

Image: Supplied

Princess Kate sensationally speaks out over photo fiasco

Kensington Palace's attempt to quell speculation about Kate Middleton's health has ignited a storm of controversy, raising concerns about the future Queen's well-being to feverish levels.

The Princess of Wales, at 42, issued an unprecedented statement on Monday morning, UK time, taking responsibility for what was described as "editing" an official portrait released on Sunday for Mother’s Day.

This portrait, featuring Kate alongside her three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – was eagerly anticipated as it marked the first sighting of the Princess since her mysterious abdominal surgery in January and subsequent disappearance from the public eye.

However, far from dispelling concerns, the photograph seemed to amplify existing suspicions about her health, with many pointing out apparent discrepancies and suggesting it had been manipulated. The situation escalated when four major photo agencies issued "kill notice" orders for the image, alleging it had been "manipulated at the source [palace]."

In a rare move, Kate Middleton took to X (Twitter) to address the controversy directly, admitting to the editing mishap and expressing regret for any confusion caused by the altered image.

"Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing," she wrote. "I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother's Day. C"

Despite her efforts to diffuse the situation, the fallout continued to unravel. Royal watchers and fans reacted strongly to the events, with some accusing the palace of using Kate as a scapegoat and questioning the integrity of the institution itself. Omid Scobie, a UK author known for his association with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, highlighted the palace's history of misinformation and suggested that regaining public trust would be an uphill battle.

“It’s fair to say that most photos released by the offices of public figures have been retouched in some way, so *if* this was an isolated incident then it would just be an unfortunate error," Scobie wrote.

"But with the Palace’s long history of lying, covering up, and even issuing statements on behalf of family members without their permission (cc: Prince Harry), it’s becoming increasingly difficult for the public to believe a word (and now photo) they share. Gaining that back at this point is an almost impossible task.”

Piers Morgan strongly urged the palace to release the unedited version of the photo to quell speculation. Failure to do so, he warned, would only fuel further conspiracy theories.

As the debate raged on social media, with Kate Middleton's name trending worldwide, users dissected the image, pointing out inconsistencies and suggesting alternative theories. The withdrawal of the photo by major news agencies, citing editorial issues, have only added fuel to the fire, further intensifying speculation.

Amidst the controversy, Princess Kate's prolonged absence from the public eye following her hospitalisation in January has only heightened concerns. Her recent appearance, photographed near Windsor Castle, marked her first public sighting in over two months, adding to the intrigue surrounding her health.

As the debate continues, the fallout from this incident may have lasting implications for both Kate Middleton and the institution she represents.

Image: Instagram

Queen Bee Catherine delights in unusual getup

Catherine, Princess of Wales, has gotten into the spirit of World Bee Day with a bee-autiful new look.

In a picture shared to the prince and princess’s official Instagram account, taken the previous year by photographer Matt Porteous, Kate could be seen standing in front of a beehive in a full beige beekeeper suit - complete with a protective veiled hat and boots - and holding a rack covered in the pollinators.

“We are buzzing about #WorldBeeDay,” came the honeyed words of the post’s caption. “Bees are a vital part of our ecosystem and today is a great opportunity to raise awareness of the essential role bees and other pollinators play in keeping people and the planet healthy.”

While the image was taken at Kate’s country home in Norfolk, beekeeping is reportedly one of Kate’s long-treasured hobbies, and she even has bees at home at Anmer Hall. And in June 2021, she turned that beloved hob-bee into a sweet - albeit quite sticky - affair, taking a jar of her own honey to give to children at London’s Natural History Museum.

The royal honey isn’t limited to just Kate’s hives, either, with both Buckingham Palace and Clarence House producing their own for their hardworking kitchens - enough that they could be considered self-sufficient.

Despite their success on the honey front, however, all attention in 2023 was on Kate and her suit - though some made note of her previous gift-giving in their comments, among the loving buzz towards the princess.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Prince and Princess of Wales (@princeandprincessofwales)

“Even in this outfit she looks stunning! “A ray of sunshine”: Catherine’s heartwarming visit to miracle baby

A mother from West Sussex has recounted the experience of having Catherine, Princess of Wales, meet her young daughter Amaya-Rae.

When Amaya-Rae was born at only 23 weeks and classed as a “late miscarriage” in August 2021, her parents were left heartbroken.

Amaya-Rae had already beaten the odds by surviving what was described as a traumatic birth, but the family’s medical team didn’t have high hopes for the baby girl, advising her parents to say their goodbyes.

Over the course of 360 days in hospital, Amaya-Rae’s family were told on eight separate occasions that she was not going to make it, but she had other ideas.

“It’s nothing short of a miracle,” her mother, Mischa, said, “I’m not religious but I really do believe she has had someone watching over her, telling her it’s not her time to go yet, sending her back.

“At first, each time we were told to say goodbye to her, our world just crumbled.”

Amaya-Rae went on to prove her mum right and her doctors wrong, defying all of the odds in her fight to survive. Now, she is almost eighteen months old, and safe at home with her family.

Despite the heartbreak that came with their time in hospital, Amaya-Rae’s mum has opened up about one bright moment in the dark: a visit from Princess Catherine.

“When we were in the Evelina Children’s Hospital, we were totally stunned when Catherine, Princess of Wales, made an unexpected visit,” Mischa recalled. “Catherine was so lovely, she listened intently to Amaya’s story, and genuinely seemed so taken with her and asked such a lot of questions.

“She seemed totally besotted, complimenting her smiles and her outfit. Amaya couldn't take her eyes off her, she was transfixed.

“Someone suggested we take her to see a Disney Princess show at Christmas, but we joked she only deals with actual royalty now.”

Amaya-Rae’s need for specialist care saw her transferred to the Evelina London Children’s Hospital, where she stayed for 166 days before getting to go home. It was there, at the children’s hospital, that she came face-to-face with the real-life princess.

Catherine, who is the hospital’s patron, was there on the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by amayarae_ story (@amayarae_story)

As Mischa explained, she was “with Amaya and her nurse came in and said we had someone who’d like to visit us. I was stunned when I realised who it was, I kept saying it couldn’t be her because it was the Jubilee weekend.”

The nurse, she said, told them that Catherine had come to visit the families who couldn’t be out celebrating, and that after being told about Amaya-Rae, she had requested to meet her.

“There were no press there, we didn’t see any bodyguards,” Mischa said of the meeting, “she just popped in to meet the children. She was so lovely.”

In an interview with the Mirror, Mischa added, “when the nurses told me she was in the hospital and wanted to meet Amaya-Rae, I completely panicked.”

“She was in her nappy. I ran around finding something presentable for her to wear. But as soon as Kate walked in through the door, all the nervousness disappeared."

After speaking on Catherine’s calming demeanour, and how Amaya-Rae was “transfixed” with the princess, Mischa reflected on their experience and the surprise introduction, saying, “there are some really dark days in a children's hospital, and for our family - and lots of others - there isn't much to look forward to.

“Everybody who met Kate said it gave them such a pick-me-up. She was a ray of sunshine in a really frightening time."

Mischa’s miracle, her ray of sunshine, is now home. Though Amaya-Rae will require oxygen for another few months, and faces some underlying conditions that Mischa hopes will be manageable and won’t hold Amaya-Rae back, she is happy to report that her daughter is just like anyone else her age.

“She is doing so well. She’s such a happy, chilled out little girl. You’d never know what she’s been through.”

Image: Instagram

Princess Catherine's adorable detail about Louis and George

Princess Catherine has revealed how her three young children are holding up following the loss of their great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

After Australia's Governor-General David Hurley arrived at Buckingham Palace on the weekend to attend the royal funeral, he spoke with the new Princess of Wales and has now recalled the conversation – during which Princess Catherine gave an insight into how Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are coping with the loss to the royal family.

Catherine revealed that Prince Louis is asking whether he will still be able to “play games” with the Queen at Balmoral.

Prince George, on the other hand, is reportedly "sort of now realising how important his great-grandmother was and what is going on” – but it appears that Prince Louis doesn’t yet quite understand, asking about the family’s visit to Balmoral Castle.

"The younger one is now asking questions like, 'Do you think we can still play these games when we go to Balmoral and things like that, cause she's not going to be there?’" Only weeks prior to the Queen’s passing, Prince William and Princess Catherine had spent time with their children and the Queen at Balmoral as part of their annual summer break.

The new Princess of Wales has also said her children were "being looked after at school" when asked how they were dealing with the loss.

Princess Catherine had made comments to well-wishers outside the gates of Sandringham House where herself and Prince William were looking at floral tributes left to the late Queen. "They're well, thank you very much, they're being looked after at school, so they are in a routine and are being looked after," Catherine said, in a video filmed by 9Honey's royal reporter.

The three Wales children have not been seen in public since the death of their great-grandmother, but are expected to have important roles for the ceremonies ahead.

Images: Getty

Prince William's sweet birthday surprise for Duchess Catherine

As the Duchess of Cambridge celebrated her 39th birthday, Prince William had to get a little more creative than he was last year.

This is due to the stage five lockdowns in the UK as well as a strict lockdown across the country, which means Duchess Kate was unable to celebrate with her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton.

According to Vanity Fair, Kate had a quiet birthday party at home with home-baked cake.

“Catherine isn’t one for lots of fuss or big parties—being with William and the children is her favourite way of spending her birthday," according to a friend.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Duke and Duchess of Cambridge (@kensingtonroyal)

As an extra treat, presents and birthday mail have been redirected to Anmer Hall, which is where the family has been living since the start of the Christmas holidays.

Prince William also lined up some surprises for the birthday girl, including family video calls with her family and friends.

Despite relaxing on her birthday, royal author Ingrid Seward said that the Duchess will be eager to get back into work in the New Year.

“Kate will want to get straight back to work, which won’t be easy with the little ones at home, but she has shown how important her work is to her,” said royal author Ingrid Seward.

“It’s not just shaking hands, she’s got to the root of the Early Years campaign and she’s going to be doing much more in this area.”

“2020 was a big year for William and Kate,” Seward added. “They emerged from it more popular than ever, but it was also important for them as a private couple. With such busy diaries, they don’t actually get much time together and this has been an exceptional year.

"The lockdown has meant they’ve had more time together and this has brought them closer together. The lockdown has been challenging at times but for Kate it’s given her the gift of more time with her husband. When you look at them as a couple, they look really happy together.”

Catherine Zeta-Jones has shared a touching tribute to her late father-in-law Kirk Douglas, following his death on Thursday at 103 years of age.

The actress had a close bond to the Hollywood star and they immediately got along after she married his son, actor Michael Douglas, in 2000.

“To my darling Kirk, I shall love you for the rest of my life. Hidden women of history: Catherine Hay Thomson – the Australian undercover journalist who went inside asylums and hospitals

See pictures of Catherine Hay Thomson here.

In 1886, a year before American journalist Nellie Bly feigned insanity to enter an asylum in New York and became a household name, Catherine Hay Thomson arrived at the entrance of Kew Asylum in Melbourne on “a hot grey morning with a lowering sky”.

Hay Thomson’s two-part article, The Female Side of Kew Asylum for The Argus newspaper revealed the conditions women endured in Melbourne’s public institutions.

Her articles were controversial, engaging, empathetic, and most likely the first known by an Australian female undercover journalist.

A ‘female vagabond’

Hay Thomson was accused of being a spy by Kew Asylum’s supervising doctor. The Bulletin called her “the female vagabond”, a reference to Melbourne’s famed undercover reporter of a decade earlier, Julian Thomas. But she was not after notoriety.

Unlike Bly and her ambitious contemporaries who turned to “stunt journalism” to escape the boredom of the women’s pages – one of the few avenues open to women newspaper writers – Hay Thomson was initially a teacher and ran schoolswith her mother in Melbourne and Ballarat.

In 1876, she became one of the first female students to sit for the matriculation exam at Melbourne University, though women weren’t allowed to study at the university until 1880.

Going undercover

Hay Thomson’s series for The Argus began in March 1886 with a piece entitled The Inner Life of the Melbourne Hospital. She secured work as an assistant nurse at Melbourne Hospital (now The Royal Melbourne Hospital) which was under scrutiny for high running costs and an abnormally high patient death rate.

Her articles increased the pressure. She observed that the assistant nurses were untrained, worked largely as cleaners for poor pay in unsanitary conditions, slept in overcrowded dormitories and survived on the same food as the patients, which she described in stomach-turning detail.

The hospital linen was dirty, she reported, dinner tins and jugs were washed in the patients’ bathroom where poultices were also made, doctors did not wash their hands between patients.

Writing about a young woman caring for her dying friend, a 21-year-old impoverished single mother, Hay Thomson observed them “clinging together through all fortunes” and added that “no man can say that friendship between women is an impossibility”.

The Argus editorial called for the setting up of a “ladies’ committee” to oversee the cooking and cleaning. Formal nursing training was introduced in Victoria three years later.

Kew Asylum

Hay Thomson’s next series, about women’s treatment in the Kew Asylum, was published in March and April 1886.

Her articles predate Ten Days in a Madhouse written by Nellie Bly (born Elizabeth Cochran) for Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World.

While working in the asylum for a fortnight, Hay Thomson witnessed overcrowding, understaffing, a lack of training, and a need for woman physicians. Most of all, the reporter saw that many in the asylum suffered from institutionalisation rather than illness.

She described “the girl with the lovely hair” who endured chronic ear pain and was believed to be delusional. The writer countered “her pain is most probably real”.

Observing another patient, Hay Thomson wrote:

She requires to be guarded – saved from herself; but at the same time, she requires treatment … I have no hesitation in saying that the kind of treatment she needs is unattainable in Kew Asylum.

The day before the first asylum article was published, Hay Thomson gave evidence to the final sitting of Victoria’s Royal Commission on Asylums for the Insane and Inebriate, pre-empting what was to come in The Argus. Among the Commission’s final recommendations was that a new governing board should supervise appointments and training and appoint “lady physicians” for the female wards.

Suffer the little children

In May 1886, An Infant Asylum written “by a Visitor” was published. The institution was a place where mothers – unwed and impoverished - could reside until their babies were weaned and later adopted out.

Hay Thomson reserved her harshest criticism for the absent fathers:

These women … have to bear the burden unaided, all the weight of shame, remorse, and toil, [while] the other partner in the sin goes scot free.

For another article, Among the Blind: Victorian Asylum and School, she worked as an assistant needlewoman and called for talented music students at the school to be allowed to sit exams.

In A Penitent’s Life in the Magdalen Asylum, Hay Thomson supported nuns’ efforts to help women at the Abbotsford Convent, most of whom were not residents because they were “fallen”, she explained, but for reasons including alcoholism, old age and destitution.

Suffrage and leadership

Hay Thomson helped found the Austral Salon of Women, Literature and the Artsin January 1890 and the National Council of Women of Victoria. Both organisations are still celebrating and campaigning for women.

Throughout, she continued writing, becoming Table Talk magazine’s music and social critic.

In 1899 she became editor of The Sun: An Australian Journal for the Home and Society, which she bought with Evelyn Gough. Hay Thomson also gave a series of lectures titled Women in Politics.

A Melbourne hotel maintains that Hay Thomson’s private residence was secretly on the fourth floor of Collins Street’s Rialto building around this time.

Home and back

After selling The Sun, Hay Thomson returned to her birth city, Glasgow, Scotland, and to a precarious freelance career for English magazines such as Cassell’s.

Despite her own declining fortunes, she brought attention to writer and friend Grace Jennings Carmichael’s three young sons, who had been stranded in a Northampton poorhouse for six years following their mother’s death from pneumonia. After Hay Thomson’s article in The Argus, the Victorian government granted them free passage home.

Hay Thomson eschewed the conformity of marriage but tied the knot back in Melbourne in 1918, aged 72. The wedding at the Women Writer’s Club to Thomas Floyd Legge, culminated “a romance of forty years ago”. Mrs Legge, as she became, died in Cheltenham in 1928, only nine years later.

Written by Kerrie Davies and Willa McDonald. They’re just like us! Cambridge family’s humble decision amid private jet furore

Prince William and Duchess Kate have arrived in Scotland to visit the Queen at her Balmoral holiday home.

However, it is not their decision to visit Her Majesty that has made headlines around the world - but instead their choice of transportation.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge along with their three children, Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 16 months, travelled home with the flew budget airline FlyBe.

The royal family was spotted landing at Aberdeen Airport from Norwich Airport, near their home of Anmer Hall on the Sandringham Estate - on a flight that would have cost them AU$139 (NZ: $147) per person on the flight.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Eugenia Garavani (@eugeniagaravani) on Aug 22, 2019 at 11:52am PDT

The news comes amidst a scandal embroiling their family, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have copped a heap of criticism for reportedly flying by private jet to Nice, France to visit singer, Elton John. The flight alone is said to have costed approximately AU$36,000 (NZD$38,000).

Media outlets and critical members of the public took turns lambasting the new royal parents for their four flights on private jets in two weeks, in the wake of Prince Harry’s recent climate change comments.

The retaliation involved a number of high profile figures coming to the defense of the royal’s including Elton John, Ellen DeGeneres and Pink.

John and a close friend both said Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan both flew private for security purposes - a claim which may not hold up to some considering the second and third-in-line-to-the-throne were photographed doing the opposite.

However, ITV’s royal editor, Chris Ship suggests the photos of the Cambridge family just confirms all the more that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a wise decision.

"The Royals are always at risk of having their privacy invaded by camera phones in the hands of other passengers," Ship wrote about the pictures taken by those on-board.

"A smarter interpretation might be this: these images - which first found their way onto the Mail Online - support Harry and Meghan's decision to accept offers of private jets to protect the privacy they so crave when they're not on duty."
